In accepting clients' starting point we can then build and expand towards health and personal growth as guided by them. There is an innate responsiveness to music that exists regardless of injury or disability and is not dependent on musical training.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is the planned use of music to assist with the healing and personal growth of people across the lifespan with identified emotional, intellectual, physical or social needs. Music being a nonverbal language is accessible to all levels of functioning.

Weekly music therapy sessions are designed around the needs of each client in order to enhance learning, enrich experiences and develop effective relationships. In music therapy sessions, the client will engage with a Registered Music Therapist through music relying on various techniques to include improvisation, singing, movement, mastery of an instrument, drumming, composition and lyric analysis. The therapist creatively supports and guides music making through which new ways to communicate, express and relate emerge.

Adapted Music Lessons

Adapted music lessons are taught by our registered music therapists who specialise in working with children and teens with special needs.

We use our training and clinical experience to come up with creative adaptations for teaching special learners. We strive to help each individual feel successful when learning the instrument and enjoy the experience. We provide lessons on the following instruments: Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, African Drums & Voice.

In addition to acquiring the skills to play the instrument, your child will have the opportunity to work on: improving receptive language skills, improving fine motor skills, and increasing sustained attention and impulse control. They’ll also have the opportunity to develop their musicality and self expression through improvisation and composition.

Testimonials

"Our son went to Yvonne for a year of group music therapy with boys of a similar age. His time in this group setting taught him how to wait, take turns and listen to his peers. In learning how to wait, he learned how to regulate and this ability to wait transferred to his learning as he showed more patience with his numeracy, even when it was difficult.  There was a noticeable growth in focus and attention having been at weekly music sessions. We really looked forward to his written feedback at the end of each term, appreciated the personal touch and suggested strategies to be tried at home by us. It served as a great link to what was happening in the sessions at school. Thank you to the school for referring him to music therapy."
